Food Wise

Probably one of the most private things in the world is an egg before it is broken.

― Mary Francis Kennedy Fisher

Food is more than your mouth.

Food Wisdoms, are the human qualities that go with the acts of growing, eating and cooking food. It's about aligning our relationship with food so that it feeds us all the way through.
It's the earth, but not a distancing through statistics, but instead living up close through experiences and getting to know life messy.

Witnessing the silent

Foodwise hopefully questions norms, and offers alternatives.  It’s also about being a good listener to ourselves, and those with less voice. It’s witnessing the silent, underrepresented, marginalized, and invisibles who also have a part to play in the kitchen, many of whom aren’t even human.

Know Value & Love

Sometimes, I feel old fashioned when I offer Foodwise posts, because they're about ethics, gratitude, and awe. They're all the intuitive thoughts that stream through my head as I stand chopping vegetables. They're what I know, value, and love. I'm privileged with a voice, and ways to share it, so I do and hope for the best.

While We're Waiting

I don’t have one-size-fits-all answer to the pressing food questions of our day. It’s complicated, but while we’re standing around sorting out the complications; coming to various understandings, we might as well be doing something.
It’s that ‘something’ that foodwise is about--- working with your hands, planting a garden, teaching children to cook, being present to the life in your kitchen, with your food--- creating community through food, eating meals as cultural events, especially at your kitchen table.
It seems to me that our three basic needs, for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens that when I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the love of it and the hunger for it… and then the warmth and richness and fine reality of hunger satisfied… and it is all one.
― Mary Francis Kennedy Fisher, The Art of Eating

Gift it on

My own food life has changed dramatically micro-moment by moment over the past two decades. Each shift has been slow but powerful. Foodwise is a place to share what I’ve discovered, and gift it on.

Cooking is at once child's play and adult joy. And cooking done with care is an act of love.
